A friend's wedding presented the opportunity to do something a little different. As it was a surprise gift there was no pressure - I could push the envelope in terms of design and techniques and if it really didn't work just go out and buy something to give instead. I had never made a curved lid before, and I was also interested in the technical challenges presented by a pair of lids pivoting on captive brass rods.
The hand-cut dovetails also provide visual interest. |
Fitting & Shaping the lidsThis photo shows the process: the left lid is shaped to fit while the right is still in its rough form. I scribed a line using the box as a guide and then planed down to it.

Inside StoryBoth compartments are identical. Contrasting sapele trims in the lower compartment support a lift-out tray, similarly trimmed and divided. The compartments are trimmed in blue suede.

The HingeThe twin lids pivot on captive brass rods and the rear lower edges had to be rounded to allow them to open but stop at just past the 90 degree point.
