As well as storage, my other pressing need was for a readily accessible sharpening station so that I could sharpen frequently without the time-wasting chore of getting out and putting away the kit each time, but also without having it take up precious space in my small workshop. The answer was this pull-out shelf beneath the main cabinet that allowed me to have all the sharpening kit readily on hand.
Any craftsman will say that sharpening is a vital discipline - but it's not one I enjoy doing so it's easy to put it off, and especially so if it's more of a palaver than it need be. This simple solution takes away that excuse and encourages me to sharpen frequently. |
Space-Efficient DesignBehind the sloping plane rack is storage space for small but less-frequently-used items, and the drawers below hold things I need more often (such as my dial calliper for fine-tolerance work).

Tool BoardsPull-out tool boards house an awful lot of kit in a small space while also affording some protection from rust in the damp-prone workshop I had at the time.

The right toolI use planes a lot, and a number of them look very similar, but this arrangement means I can clearly see which one I'm selecting. Well, OK, then - it also shows off the fine planes!
